简介

Articial intelligence (AI) is an old and new topic, which leads researchers to understand the complexity in the reading nature and the reaction of human inner self. This project in this sequence of AI research projects hosted on Qingfan will focus on complex systems and cybernetics. Studying Wolfram Research with its Mathematica and Alpha is a good start for us to understand the symbolic system and the prerequisite to learn cybernetics. In this project, you will learn the Wolfram Language (Mathematica) and start a journey for cybernetics.

任务1

Simple task

try Alpha website. Play with it and find out how it works. Write a report as short as possible to explain the mechanism behind Wolfram Alpha and try to ask questions as below to yourself. What is the limitation of Wolfram Alpha? What kind of questions are hard for it? What are easy questions? Is Wolfram Alpha as smart as human? And try to read the book A New Kind of Science1 (NKS). Select 2 chapters out of the rest 5 chapters of the book and read them carefully. Write a short summary of the 2 chapters you selected.

Background knowledge study

Select additional 3 chapters from the book A New Kind of Science, and peruse them. By now you should have at least finished reading 5 chapters of the book. As you know, Stephen Wolfram is a bragging man, so criticize his book. Write a summary of the components of the book that you read (which should contain at least 5 chapters). It should be concise, and your innovative interpretations and thoughts are the most welcome. If you are attracted, you could search the anecdote between Stephen Wolfram and Richard Feynman.

Language study

Learn the Wolfram Language. Find an example here and write the code by yourself, replicate the result and understand this knowledge based language. Write a short report on that. As expected, almost every task achieved by human can be programmed.It is extremely simple in Mathematica.

Further exploration

Now, it is the time to explore more and go deeper than the book NKS. Find a book here in Wolfram’s library according to your background or your interests. All of these books are inspiring and worth reading. Understand the book and answer Wolfram Alpha questions in the book and compare the answers to yours. Write a summary on how knowledgeable Alpha is on the specific topic. Try hard to push Alpha to its extreme.
